Home Energy Assessment Case Study - Stonington, CT

Helping a Stonington Homeowner Lower Energy Bills with Air Sealing and Insulation

At Dynamic, we specialize in helping Connecticut homeowners improve comfort and reduce energy costs through professional home energy assessments, air sealing, and insulation upgrades.

Recently, our team completed a Home Energy Solutions assessment in Stonington, Connecticut, identifying key opportunities to improve the home’s energy efficiency and lower heating costs.

The Home Energy Assessment

The home we evaluated was a 1,547 sq. ft. single-family house in Stonington, CT, heated with propane and cooled with central air conditioning. Like many homes in southeastern Connecticut, the homeowner was experiencing rising energy costs and inconsistent comfort throughout the house.

During the energy assessment, our technician performed a blower door test, which allows us to measure how much air leaks in and out of the home. This test helps identify hidden drafts and areas where conditioned air is escaping.

Based on the results of the assessment, we identified several opportunities to improve the home’s energy efficiency.

Air Sealing Improvements

The first step was blower-door guided air sealing, a process that allows our technicians to seal air leaks throughout the home while the blower door is running.

This included:

  • Targeted sealing of air leaks

  • Approximately 200 feet of caulking

  • Installation of door weatherstripping

  • Reducing the home’s air leakage from 2254 CFM to 1903 CFM

These improvements help prevent heated air from escaping during the winter and reduce unwanted drafts throughout the home.

The air sealing alone is estimated to save the homeowner about $184 per year in energy costs.

Recommended Insulation Upgrades

In addition to air sealing, the energy assessment identified insulation improvements that would significantly increase efficiency.

Attic Floor Insulation

Adding insulation to the attic floor helps prevent heat from escaping through the roof — one of the most common causes of energy loss in Connecticut homes.

Basement Ceiling Insulation

Insulating the basement ceiling can help keep the living areas above warmer in winter and reduce energy loss through the foundation.

These upgrades are estimated to reduce propane usage and provide over $500 per year in additional energy savings.

Projected Energy Savings

Based on the full assessment, the home’s estimated annual energy costs could decrease from $3,616 to approximately $2,836 per year after implementing the recommended improvements.

That’s nearly $800 in potential annual savings, while also improving comfort throughout the home.
